A Brief Discussion About: Chakras
Share
Introduction
For this post I thought it might be interesting to talk about chakras: what they are; what happens when they are out of balance; and how to help get them back into harmony.
I have been fascinated by chakras for many years now (hence why the first piece of jewellery I ever designed for sale was my “Balance” chakra bracelet, followed closely by earrings and necklaces (links to these pieces are at the bottom of this post). I have used natural, genuine gemstones in these pieces to encourage the reharmonization of the chakra energy centres. I discuss how certain gemstones can be used to balance the chakra system further on in this article, along with several other effective techniques to achieve harmonisation. Please scroll to the end of this article to find links to all of the resources I discuss below.
A Quick Overview
There are seven major chakras (energy centres) running along the length of your spine: Root (represented by the colour red); Sacral (orange); Solar Plexus (yellow); Heart (green); Throat (blue); Third Eye (indigo); and Crown (violet).
The root chakra is focused on security, protection, and stability. The sacral chakra is associated with emotional regulation, as well as sexual and creative energy. The solar plexus chakra is centred around self-confidence and determines how in control you feel. The heart charka, as one would expect, is all about love, compassion, and empathy. The throat chakra deals with communication. The third eye chakra affects intuition and is linked to trusting one’s instincts. The crown chakra is connected with our spirit and how connected we feel with ourselves, others, and the Universe.
Maintaining Balance
If a chakra is being deprived of energy for any reason you may find yourself unable to properly express the qualities associated with the chakra. If, on the other hand, the chakra is overenergised, the properties of the chakra may become a domineering element in your life, potentially leading to physical or emotional side effects.
Chakras can be reharmonised, so never fear! There are particular yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditations and affirmations that can help bring the chakras back into balance. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), a.k.a. Tapping, can also be used to bring these energy centres back into alignment. Finally, you can wear, mediate with, or just have near you specific natural gemstones that also aid in balancing the chakras. One, some, or all of these techniques can be used. Pick the ones that resonate strongest with you and provide the results you want or need.
Balancing Method #1
Yoga Poses
Root: Tree, Mountain, or Warrior
Sacral: Bridge, Pigeon, or Lizard
Solar Plexus: Boat or Triangle
Heart: Camel, Wheel, Cow Face Pose, or Humble Warrior
Throat: Plow or Fish
Third Eye: Folded Eagle
Crown: Corpse
Balancing Method #2
Breathing Exercises
Pranayama (“breath control”): because chakras are believed to be linked to specific areas of the brain, deep breathing has the potential to balance the energy.
An extremely beneficial book on breathing is by Stuart Sandeman called Breathe In, Breathe Out. He has a website, BreathPod, with various resources available, as well as an Instagram page where he does meditation Lives. He is also in the process of launching an app, however, it does appear that it will require a monthly subscription and it may only be available in the UK or Europe initially.
Balancing Method #3
Meditations and Affirmations
In my previous post I mentioned that one of the resources I use to help with my anxiety issues is an app called Insight Timer. The vast majority of their meditations (of which there are MANY) are free. There are a large variety of different types of meditations and breathing exercises available on the app including a significant number that deal with balancing chakras (there are individual ones for specific chakras or ones that cover all of them at once). You can find the practitioner(s) you connect with the best and stick with them for consistent results.
In her book, The Secret to Life Wellness, Inna Segal has an excellent chakra balancing meditation that has personally worked wonders for me in the past. She also has an audio course on her website that covers the seven main chakras, how to work with them, and how to heal them. I will link to it at the bottom of this post.
Different affirmations can be used to help harmonise your energy centres too:
Root: "I am;" "I am secure in my being"
Sacral: "I feel;" "I invite joy into my life"
Solar Plexus: "I do;" "I am aligned with my purpose"
Heart: "I love;" "I am worthy of love and accept it with open arms"
Throat: "I speak;" "I speak my truth confidently and with grace"
Third Eye: "I see;" "I am grateful for my inner vision"
Crown: "I understand;" "I am connected with the wisdom of the Universe"
Balancing Method #4

The following gemstones have been identified to help balance out the chakra energy centres (keep in mind that these are only a small fraction of the gemstones that can be utilised for this purpose):
